Garden arbor design and construction basics.

The key to designing and building a strong, stable and attractive garden arbor is to think about the type of plants you plan to grow on it. When you’re choosing a plan for your garden arbor, make sure it has been designed to support the plants you have in mind. If you’re planning to grow heavy, bushy plants like roses, you’ll need a very sturdy arbor, preferably built using pressure treated lumber. The width and weight of the trellises will also be determined by the size of the plants they will need to support.

A large timber garden arbor will need a strong foundation. For an eight foot span arbor, you’ll need to dig the foundation holes around three feet deep and a foot wide. The posts for the arbor will need to be braced to keep them vertical, and set in concrete, which will need to cure for at least one day before the crosspieces can be set across the top.
