Arbors Give Gardens a Dash of Drama—from Easy Arbor Plans to Romantic Arbor Designs

There's a good reason why garden arbors are one of the most popular garden structures. For relatively little money, a garden gets an instant shot of drama. You can also dress up the entry way to your back yard or add a highlight to your front yard. They are also relatively easy to put together. You can build one in a weekend and it will add a lot of character to your yard.

Arbors can also have a lot of different functions. From an attractive place to grow your plants and vines to a nice shaded bench. I have a friend who built an arbor with birdhouse at top. You can also find arbors with gates and other features.

Red cedar is the classic material for building an arbors, but it's not the only one. They can be made out of a variety of materials. So depending on your garden and budget you can find the arbor that is perfect.

You can assemble arbors from pre-fab kits or you can build your own from simple arbor plans. If you're in need of ideas, there are dozens of great arbor designs to be found on this site and online.

Arbor Styles

Arbors do double duty as garden focal points and expert plant helpers. Arbors define an entryway to a garden feature or space, such as a path, gate, or garden room. Lattice arbor designs are also ideal for training climbing plants such as roses, clematis, and ivy. Unlike a two dimensional trellis, the arbor provides flat or curved "roof" to support a leafy canopy, ideal for shady sitting areas.

Arbors can be constructed from a wide range of materials, including iron, cedar, willow and branches, and PVC (plastic).

Arbor and Pergola Plans

If you want to build an arbor or pergola from scratch, I have found a few sites that have plans that you can purchase and download. The plans are not very expensive and they provide you with great information to build your own outdoor structure for your garden, patio or backyard.

The outdoor arbor plans can be built as a standard wood arbor and you can also add a bench. The plans for the bench with the arbor are included. You also get instructions and a material list. To purchase and download the plans, please Click Here!

If you are interested in making a pergola, the next site I found has a wide selection of pergola designs - from 8 x 10 to 16 x 16. This way you can pick the perfect plan to fit your site and then order the one you want. Just make sure you measure your space before ordering your plans. If you are not sure on the exact sizes you can order a package with three or five different sizes. For the plans to build your own pergola - Click Here!
