Getting started with free storage shed plans.

Anyone with a few basic carpentry skills can build a simple storage shed in their backyard, and there are lots of free storage shed plans online to get you started.

A free storage shed plan will include a list of tools and materials, complete step-by-step instructions, photographs and illustrations, and plenty of handy tips.

You can also create your own storage shed plan using a shed design software program, which is very simple to use, and a lot of fun.

Three things to consider before you plan and build your storage shed.
1. Materials

The type of timber you use to build your storage shed will determine the cost of the project, the look of your shed when it’s finished, the amount of ongoing maintenance the shed will require, and how long it will last.

Natural timbers like red cedar have a magnificent look, while wood composite materials are less expensive and require less maintenance.

Storage sheds can also be built from aluminum and PVC vinyl, which are very economical, durable, and virtually maintenance-free. There are kits for aluminum and vinyl storage sheds, which have all the components of the shed ready to assemble.

2. Foundations

If the soil in your backyard is very soft or tends to retain moisture, or if you tend to experience strong winds, you would be wise to set a concrete slab foundation.

The alternative is to buy a storage shed foundation kit. This consists of a steel frame which you can fill with concrete, or attach a piece of plywood over the top. This will keep the base of the shed square, and keep the floor elevated slightly from the ground.

3. Building Approval

Be sure to check that your storage shed plans comply with local building codes before you begin buying materials. In some areas, local authorities will require you to obtain formal permission to build even a small storage shed.
