An elegant wrought iron trellis or garden arbor gives your garden a touch of old world elegance.

An iron trellis or arbor is very simple to set up, but it can transform the look and feel of your garden. Trellises and arbors can be used to create a vertical garden, providing shade and privacy, and putting the garden plants on show. Iron trellises and garden arbors come in a stunning variety of styles and designs, including delicate geometric patterns, organic shapes such as leaves and flowers, or imaginative abstract designs.

Whether you want your garden design to have a romantic, classic style, or something more abstract and contemporary, you’re sure to find an iron arbor or garden trellis which works beautifully. Iron arbors and trellises work best with delicate climbing plants, rather than denser, bushier garden plants which are better suited to solid wooden trellises and arbors. Sweet pea, ivy, jasmine and wisteria look beautiful on a small iron arbor or trellis, and larger arbors are perfect for growing masses of magnificent roses.

Setting up your garden trellis or arbor.

You can buy wrought iron arbors and trellises either ready to install in your garden, or as a kit. Arbor and trellis kits are very easy to assemble, and in most cases you won’t need any special tools. A small trellis only needs to be set against a wall or placed freestanding, with the posts buried in holes around a foot deep.

Placing two or three inches of gravel in the bottom of the post holes adds stability to the trellis, and ensures the plant receives adequate drainage. Plant your vine in the garden about six inches away from the trellis. Larger trellises and garden arbors need to be set in a firm concrete foundation.
