A survey of the greenhouse supplies you'll need for your greenhouse kit

The decision to purchase a greenhouse kit is just one of many you’ll make on the road to four-season gardening. Greenhouse supplies, such as ventilation systems, misting systems, heating, and lighting are a big investment. It pays to research these items online before you buy. And, of course nothing beats speaking to greenhouse specialists at your favorite plant nurseries.

Depending on the size of your greenhouse or solarium, and how sophisticated you want to be, there are a number of important greenhouse supplies to consider:

Automated ventilation systems keep greenhouse temperatures consistent

Cooling your greenhouse in hot weather is critical. An automated system that opens and shuts roof and side vents simplifies the process.

Misting and fogging systems maintain healthy humidity, and assist in greenhouse cooling and watering

Misting and fogging systems replace essential moisture that is lost when a greenhouse is vented and prevents plants from drying or wilting. They are also effective for greenhouse cooling; fine mist increases evaporation and lowers the air temperature. For tropical plants, cuttings, and seedlings misting systems are commonly used for watering.

Shade covers are an inexpensive method of greenhouse cooling and lighting

Shade covers can provide 45% to 65% shading from direct sun. For plants that don’t like direct sun, shade covers provide the ideal amount of light and aid in greenhouse cooling.

Heating systems maintain the desired day or night temperatures in cold climates

Let the types of plants you plan to grow, your climate, and greenhouse design determine if you need a heating system. Heaters can be electric, gas, oil or wood. Electric heaters are a good choice for smaller hobby greenhouses. A gas heater is probably more cost effective for a larger size greenhouse. All heating systems must be safely and adequately vented. Some systems may have overheat controls that alert you to potential problems with the heater.

Benches add work space to your greenhouse, as well as shaded areas

Your back will thank you if you have plenty of work space at counter level in your greenhouse.

Artificial lighting can extend the growing season in your greenhouse

Give nature's seasons in your region a boost with lighting that extends the day.
