Choosing
plants for your garden arbor or trellis
One of
the most satisfying accomplishments after building a
garden arbor,
garden trellis or pergola, is training
plants over these garden structures. Climbing plants
can be chosen for color, scent, and screening.

However, as with all plants in your garden, carefully consider
the location of your garden arbor or garden trellis
when selecting vines and other climbers. There are
climbing plants for full sun and shade, plants
with slow and vigorous growth habits, and plants
that require and do not require support. All the
plants listed here are suitable for arbors,
trellises and pergolas.
Keep in
mind though, that a wild or vigorous climber may
happily take over your garden arbor and the form of
the structure will be disappear. For unique arbor
designs, this would be a shame. The same goes for
trellises. Also make sure that you understand the
care and pruning requirements of your climber so
that all your planting and training efforts will be
rewarded.
