Magnificent
trellis roses add a lovely touch of charm to
your garden.
Trellis roses create a charming English country
garden feel, and fill your garden with a wonderful
scent. It’s very easy to grow a trellis rose bush
and with enough care you’ll have a magnificent
vertical garden of gorgeous flowering roses.
Trellises may form part of a large garden arbor,
or they may be small, simple and freestanding. A
simple freestanding trellis is very easy to put
together yourself, in fact, the more rustic and
hand-made it looks the better. You could also
position the trellis against a wall, to turn an
unsightly blank wall space into a gorgeous, colorful
rose garden.
Tips for growing
roses on a trellis.
It’s important to remember that a climbing rose
bush is a heavy, woody plant, so your trellis will
need to be strong enough to support the weight,
particularly in windy weather. Make sure the trellis
is planted firmly in a secure foundation. The
lattice of the trellis will need to be wide enough
for the thick canes of the rose bush to weave
through, and also to allow you enough room to prune
them comfortably.
Ideally, the canes, which are the main structural
shoots of the rose bush, should grow horizontally
along the trellis. This way they will produce more
flowers than they would on a vertical rose tower
structure. If you are placing the trellis against a
wall, position it a couple of feet away from the
wall to ensure the rose bush receives enough
circulation and to give you room for pruning and
maintenance. A freestanding trellis should ideally
be placed at right angles to the prevailing wind
direction, or in a sheltered position.
