With a little
know-how, anyone can build a garden trellis.
A garden trellis is a lovely garden
landscaping feature, and it’s very easy to build one
yourself. A simple wooden trellis allows you to grow
delicate climbing plants and vines, and display them
where they can be seen all over the garden. Your
trellis can be freestanding, or you can place it
against a wall to turn a dull, blank space into a
delightful vertical garden.
Building a garden trellis only requires a few very
simple carpentry skills and an afternoon at the
most. You’ll find all the plans, design guides and
materials you need to build a garden trellis just by

Garden trellis design
basics.
Before you begin to build your garden trellis, it’s
a good idea to decide which types of plants you’d like
to grow on it, and design your trellis to suit. Ask
your gardening supplier for advice on which climbing
plants grow best in your local area.
Jasmine, climbing hydrangea and sweet pea are all
plants which will grow well on a small garden trellis.
The smaller and more delicate the plant, the smaller
you should make the gaps in the lattice of your
trellis and vice-versa. For larger, heavier, bushy
plants like roses you’ll need a large trellis or a
garden arbor.
Building the trellis itself is very easy. Simply
place the wood pieces in a criss-cross pattern and fix
them in place with wood glue. Next you’ll need to
drill some holes in your trellis posts and screw the
whole structure together. Dig the post holes around
two feet deep, and fill the bottom of the holes will
gravel for stability and drainage.
