Building Your Own
Barn Style Shed
Even if you’ve never built anything
before in your life, you’ll be surprised at how
simple it is to build your own
barn style shed. Barn
style sheds add a nice touch of character to your
backyard, and you can use them to store anything
from skateboards and bikes to gardening equipment
and tools. Gambrel style roofs not only look great,
they give you more storage space than a flat roof.
To get you started you can buy building plans for
a gambrel style shed or small barn online, either to
download, or by mail order. There is a range of
design options to choose from including;
- The overall size of the shed, typically ranging
from around 8’x8’ to 12’x16’.
- Front or side entrance, or both, with single or
double doors.
- You may choose to add a porch, steps, or a ramp
leading to the doors.
- Concrete slab or timber joisted floor.
Before You Begin Building Your Shed
you should consider the following.
The Golden Rule for any kind of DIY or home
improvement project, whether you’re a beginner or an
expert, is to fully understand every step of the
process before you begin, and to have all the tools
and materials ready.
Good shed plans
will provide you with a complete list of everything
you’ll need to build your shed, so you can make one
single visit to your local hardware supplier. Not
having all your tools ready to hand will cause delays
in the building process, which may mean your half
finished shed will be left lying around in the
backyard until the following weekend. If you have some
unfavorable weather in the meantime, you may expose
your materials to damage.
It’s also important to really understand all the
steps in the building process before you begin, to
avoid expensive and time consuming errors.
